Older
In school we had lavish lunch breaks.
We had time for food, time for gossip,
time for football and time for mischief.
We had one, maybe 2 or was it 5 or 8 of us
Imitating teachers, mocking each other,
laughing under desks and tearing down walls.
We had cornetto cones for dessert
and not enough money for Silk.
We had desks for drums and mouths for guitars.
We were the band and the audience.
We were the lovers and the dreamers.
We were never more than half an arm’s length
from the comfort of company.
Backman was right.
We always thinks there’s enough time to do things with other people.
This afternoon, I skipped lunch.
