Being in Thalassery in December means that I am there for one reason only – watching Theyyam. I would love to do a deep dive into Theyyam’s history and mythology but thats a long project which I hope I will do one day. In the meantime, I made this quick intro to Theyyam instead. It is a fascinating folk artform with deep roots in indigenous culture and mythology and with complex caste (and anti-caste) symbolism. This, is theyyam.
